-ing : 실험적으로 뭘 해보고, 즉 시도하다? (experiment with)
to- : 뭔가 해낼라고 노력함 (try without success)
stop
-ing : 뭔가 하는걸 멈춤. 지금은 안함
to- : 뭔가 하려고 멈춤.

→ describe a complete event
I saw my friends leave the restaurant.

→ describe an event in progress or an event that take place
I heard people singing.
